#6 Sultan Mosque

  • When was Sultan Mosque first built and by whom?
The Sultan Mosque was first built in 1826 and was partially funded by the East India Company as part of the agreement to leave Kampong Gelam to Sultan Hussein and his family in return for sovereign rights to Singapore.

Sultan Mosque was named after Sultan Hussein as a testimony to his generousity.

  • Who designed the present Sultan Mosque and in what style?
The present Sultan Mosque was designed by Denis Santry who was working for architectural firm Swan and McLaren. The mosque had a Saracenic style with minarets and balustrades.
  • Do you spot anything interesting about the 2 domes of the mosque?
The "obsidian" bottom layer of the dome was made of glass bottles.
